A little down today

Posted by: Gem | Comments (7)

Today is October 24.  That was our 4th baby’s due date, the one we lost in April.  I’ve been a little melancholy all day.   I hugged all my babies extra close today and thanked God for them, but I should have been holding a newborn today.  I’ve been numb about it for a long time, but a little sadness broke through today.  Tomorrow’s a new day.

Vacation Pictures Part 1

Posted by: Gem | Comments (4)

Ok, I sure hope this doesn’t blow my data allotment for this blog! In a nutshell: Vacation was awesome, the reunion was fun — very casual, just a cook-out with about 15 of the 23 members of my graduating class, time with Mom was WAAAAY too short, time with my in-laws even shorter. Driving was WAAAAAY too long — even Squid said we should fly next time and he was the main “let’s drive, flying is too expensive” proponent. Now, on to the pictures.

As I mentioned, we drove aaaalll the way to Kansas. The first leg of the trip was 12 hours, to Kansas City. One of the rest stops had a cute little play area, with a super-wide teeter-totter, swings, and a climbing area. You’ll notice a theme in all the pictures — I’m usually taking them so you won’t see me much!

After staying the night in Kansas City, we had a late breakfast, trip to Walmart for things we forgot, and a leisurely trip to Stafford. There is no hotel in Stafford except for the establishment affectionately known to the natives as The Roach Motel. No thanks! But a few years ago a former resident bought up several old Victorians and has opened 4 bed-and-breakfasts. The one we stayed in was probably the most recent acquisition and still has a lot of renovations to be done.

See those stairs? Those go up to the ‘Gentlemen’s Suite’, which was where we were staying. It was a very interesting suite of rooms, two bedrooms with two beds each, a strange little hallway and a private bath. With three children (one potty training), a shared bathroom would have been asking for disaster!

Now, I didn’t take any pictures of the Oktoberfest parade float — it was very elaborate: Hay bales and a sign that said “20th Reunion Class of 1986″. Yeah, we’re not one of the super school-spirit classes, we just wanted to hang out! There were pictures taken, but I seem to have deleted the e-mail. As soon as I get it again, I’ll post the uber-float here!

OK, this is getting long — I think I’ll post part 2 later!

Prayers, please?

Posted by: Gem | Comments (6)

A family at our church is begging for prayers today. They called the church this morning to ask everyone to send urgent prayers before the Father for little Jake, their two-year-old son. He’s been having some unexplained symptoms lately and has been undergoing testing for about 3 weeks now. On top of that, his mom just had a baby about 3 weeks ago as well!

His MRI last night revealed a tumor on his spine about the size of a lemon. The doctors cautioned his parents that these tumors are often cancerous. The neurosurgeon is going in today to open up Jake’s spinal column and to remove the part of the tumor that is impacting his spinal cord. Future treatments will be discussed later, today’s treatment is simply to protect the spinal cord from damage by the tumor.

The family is asking all of us to take time today to pray to God for a miracle that will only be explained as an intervention by God. Please pray that there is no cancer and that Jake will not be in pain.

The doctors are running more tests right now but they are planning to do the surgery early this afternoon. The head of the neurosurgery unit at Children’s Hospital is taking on this case himself.

UPDATE 10/20/06 (from our church Flashnet announcements):

Jake came through his first surgery yesterday in good shape. The neurosurgeon was able to open the bottom of his spine and drain the tumor of its contents around the spinal cord in order to remove the pressure. The next phase is to analyze the tumor to determine its nature and devise a plan of action. They should be able to determine this by the first of next week. The doctor said that this was very common and that chemotherapy often simply dissolved this kind of tumor. So, we all joined in a prayer of thanksgiving and hope that God will bring about a total recovery. Nonetheless, much more remains in this battle and your prayers are coveted by the family. Please keep Jake in your prayers.

I’m Baaaaaaack

Posted by: Gem | Comments (6)

Actually, we were back yesterday, but I had to recuperate from vacation!  It was lots of fun and way too short.  I didn’t get as many pictures as I’d like to have — I forgot my cable, so couldn’t upload any from the road.  I did find out that my camera holds 102 pictures at medium resolution.  I promise I won’t post them all!
Well, the children are begging to get online, so I’ll post trip details and pictures later.  I hope you didn’t forget me!

See Ya Later!

Posted by: Gem | Comments (5)

We’re heading to Kansas tomorrow morning, so today’s busy with last-minute tasks. We’re going to my ::cough:: 20th ::cough:: high school reunion this weekend, spending time with my mom and sister next week, and then meeting up with Squid’s parents for the next weekend. Lots of stuff to do, people to see! I can’t wait, I think my Mom is about to burst with excitement. This sister hasn’t even seen Monkey Boy yet, she’s pretty geeked too!

Hold the fort for me, I may or not may not blog from the road.
