Servant Heart
We recently went to a marriage seminar that really hit home with me. They made a particular point over and over — that until we can truly have a servant’s heart toward our spouse, it is hard to make a marriage work. So, on that note, a recent scene from my family room.
Set notes:
Both Squid and Gem are sitting in the family room. Kids are nestled all snug in their beds, and Papa (sans cap) is sitting in his chair watching Battlestar Galactica with his laptop in his lap, also blogging. Mama (sans kerchief) is sitting at the computer desk, blog surfing and entering apron contests.
Squid (Papa): Do we have any ice cream?
Gem(Mama): I think there’s a little left. (thinks a minute) Yes, there is some in there.
slight pause
Squid: Could you go get me some ice cream?
longer pause
Gem: evil eye look, slight growl
Squid: I guess that’s a no?
Gem: (deep sigh) No, not exactly. It’s inner struggle. (stands to go get ice cream) You see, I want to have a servant’s heart and go get you the ice cream. But it pisses me off when we’re both sitting here comfy and you ask me to go get you something. I never do that.
Squid: (raised eyebrow look)
Gem: (quickly backtracking) Ok, well maybe not never. But hardly ever, well not very much. . . (backpedal, backpedal)
Squid: I wouldn’t say you never do it, but I think it’s fair to say that I do it to you more often than you do it to me.
Gem: (on the way upstairs for ice cream, calls over her shoulder) OK, I’ll take that. I win!
And that, my friends, is how a marriage works!

I know I’m old fashioned, but in my experience if a man EVER gets up and gets you something when you’re comfy….you’re lucky. I think a lot of it is how their parents did things and it is hard to change that whether it was good or bad habits. It all depends on how you intrepret “less of self and more of thee”. Every day is a new beginning and it’s encouraging that people get a chance to try things differently. Just keep the Love Light burning and that helps.

We’ve had discussions like that around here, too - must be universal!

Just hope he remembers the servant heart when it’s 5 degrees out and you need to put gas in the car!!!
