I get kind of bored with most memes — you go from post to post reading the same questions, it gets hard to come up with answers sometimes. But this one I saw at Doc’s and Andrea’s is kind of neat — you leave a random comment here, and I’ll ask you 5 questions. Here are Andrea’s questions for me:

1. What culture fascinates you?

The Amish culture has always fascinated me. I loved “Rebecca of the Amish” and “Plain Girl” as a kid. Now, I’ve met people from Amish country who say it’s not as idyllic as it seems, but the ideal sounds so great — a community that trusts and depends upon each other, living simply and basically. Oh, well, nothing’s perfect!

2. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

Scotland or Ireland. I visited Scotland once and if my then-fiance (now dh) weren’t waiting back here I would have stayed!

3. Your life is being made into a movie: What genre is it and who plays you?

Oh, it’s one of those quirky weird comedies that most people don’t really get (but with funny quotes - think Napoleon Dynamite). Hmmm, who could play me, not sure. Let me think on that and come back to it. OK, back. Can’t really think of anyone — maybe Anne Heche a la “Men in Trees”. Of course she’s WAY too skinny!

4. What’s the earliest thing you remember?

Getting left at daycare — there was a miscommunication about who was picking me up, I’ve since found out — I remember sitting on a teacher’s desk and eating grapes.

5. What’s your bestest skill? you know, that one thing, however small, that you can do better than almost anyone else that makes you feel real proud when you’ve done it?

OK, this is sad — I can’t really think of one. I do a lot of things pretty well, but nothing super-outstanding. I’ll have to ask Squid what he thinks it would be.

The Rules of the Meme:
1. Leave me a comment saying anything random, like [the food you hate most in all the world]. Something random. Whatever you like.
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

I could totally see Anne Heche playing you. :)
How old were you in #4?
And #5 doesn’t have to be anything outstanding, maybe you make the best tuna casserole in the neighborhood or have awesome envelope addressing skills (I always screw that up). :D

  2. jax

All of my siblings have a middle name, I’m the only one who doesn’t.

    (Is that suitably random?)

  3. Suzi

When I say random things at home, it always involves pickles.

    5. ummmmmm, I’m going to borrow one from Andrea here. What is the very most special thing you can do, the one thing that makes you really proud, that no one can do quite as well as you do?

  5. Ron

My initials are a palindrome :D

I am afraid that when I smoosh a spider and flush it down the toilet that it will only be playing dead and every time I use the bathroom afterward I fear that it will crawl out and bite me on the butt.
    That random enough???

    5. Now that the whole Harry Potter series is over, what’s next on the book obsession list for you?

I am overweight. I ate nothing yesterday but an apple and lots of distilled water. Why did I gain 2 pounds?

It was on my mind and it was random.

Hello, Joe, haven’t seen you around here before!

    Here’s your questions:

    1. How many different weight-loss plans have you tried?
    2. What were the least and most successful?
    3. What kind of apples do you like, red and crispy or yellow and not so crisp? Sweet or tart?
    4. What homeschooling philosophy/curriculum do you use?
    5. Who is your favorite author?

Thanks, I just found this site yesterday. We pulled our daughter (sixth grader) out of public school last year and our son (first grader) this year. So we are still fairly new to home schooling. I was just browsing blogs and came across this post and felt like joining in.

    Here are my answers:

    1. How many different weight-loss plans have you tried?
I have honestly lost track. They all boil down to diet and exercise. The plans that focused more on exercise were the most effective.

    2. What were the least and most successful?
The least effective was one that is sort of like the Zone Diet where you eat certain combinations of foods on certain times of day.

The most effective was spending 2 hours a day in the gym and drinking a protein shake for 2 out of 3 meals a day.

    3. What kind of apples do you like, red and crispy or yellow and not so crisp? Sweet or tart?

I like red firm apples that are a little tart. I’ve switched to only organic fruits and have found that they turn brown faster while I’m eating them but they have such a richer flavor that when I try a regular Fuji or other grocery store brand, that they seem to be almost flavorless compared to the organic kind.

    4. What homeschooling philosophy/curriculum do you use?
We have been fortunate enough to be part of a program that provides us with a curriculum that follows the local school district. From a philosophical perspective, we like to keep our children way ahead of the public school year so they can take “time off” to take in more field trips than would be feasible with a traditional public school. For instance, we’ve gone to Spain, Mexico, Canada and Florida during the regular school year. (of course, we still make the kids do some school work during these trips so there is no real time off from education). Our daughter thought it was a blast to be doing her Spanish homework on the beach in Mexico in November while her friends were stuck in a classroom in the frozen tundra of Minnesota.

    5. Who is your favorite author?
    For Self Help: Robert Kiyosaki
For Science Fiction: Piers Anthony and Isaac Asimov
    For Epic Tales: JRR Tolkien
    For prophetic drama: Tim LaHaye

I guess I like a lot of authors.
