Aargh! I totally screwed up!

Posted by: Gem | Comments (5)

OK, this whole school thing is making me crazy. Not so much the decision to put the girls in school (still angsty), but the actually getting ready for school. Boy, what a hassle! First, Tuesday we had to go uniform shopping because once I finally went and picked up the information packet (Monday, a week and a half after they said they mailed it), I realized that the giant tote of fall hand-me-downs we just were gifted with would NOT be keeping us from school clothes shopping after all. We tried Target first, our Target didn’t have the uniforms, but one up by the mall does. So we tried Wal-mart across the street. I really didn’t want to give WM my money, but didn’t really want to drive to the other Target so we looked. Nothing in the right sizes in the right colors. So, off we went to Target. Wait, but there’s a Kohl’s up by the mall, too, let’s try there! Just for the record, it is NOT a good idea to drag a 3yo boy through three stores without buying him anything and then expect him to behave while his sisters try on clothes. It was not fun for him at all. After that, we headed home to make dinner, tired and cranky. Oh, and Squid has been working 7 days straight so far with 7 more to go without a day off. Doesn’t make for happy mommy — happy anyone, really!

This was not the total screwup, though, this is just a lead-in. Yesterday I had planned to hunt down the girls’ birth certificates and SS cards (somehow lost in a move between desks), get all their other paperwork together, and take them down to the school to meet their teacher and see their classroom. It was a big deal to them, they’ve never actually been in a school. BUT pregnant brain took over and I instead got a hair to go school supply shopping. What the heck was I thinking?! Again, the 3yo is in tow since Daddy’s working, and he is bored, bored, bored (the 3yo, not Squid). First we went back to Kohl’s to return some maternity pants I bought last week that didn’t seem to fit the same when we got home as they did in the dressing room. Bonus cash for shopping! We bumped into friends there who invited us to come swim when we got done. Then we hit Sam’s Club. They have everything at Sam’s, right? I figured since I had to buy twice as many items, I’d get them in bigger quantities there and cheaper. Wrong. They had NO basic school supplies. Fancy Lisa Frank pencil collections and a NICE assortment of homeschooling type workbooks, but no big packs of pencils, paper, or anything else we needed. Even the Clorox wipes I went there for are actually cheaper at Wal-mart. Sigh. Meanwhile my friend called back and said she had too much last-minute stuff to do herself, we’d have to do the swimming another day. So now I dragged the cranky, disappointed, hot, NOT-swimming kids to Target. I found everything I needed there. Why do I even bother going anywhere else? THEN we had to hit the Dollar Store for backpacks and lunchboxes. Of course Monkey Boy had to have a toy then, and he had been done shopping for an hour or so. “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! Buy me a Spiderman lunchbox! Buy me a Transformer toy! Buy me a !!!!!!” Again, not fun. As we are FINALLY driving home, I realize, “OH CRAP we were going to see your classroom today!!” Oh, well, we’ll do it tomorrow.

So, this morning I get up (we’ve been getting up at 6:30 to practice for school all week too, another cranky factor) and start hauling!   I got all the paperwork finished up, searched for TWO HOURS and found the birth certificates and SS cards.  Then it occurs to me — this is Labor Day weekend.  I wonder if they’ll even be open today?  I call the the school — not only are they closed today, but the office won’t be open until Wednesday morning for school.  AAARRRGGGHHH!!!!  I am so upset!  I wanted to see the classroom.  I wanted the girls to meet their teacher and get comfortable with where things are.  Darn these hormones, I’m sitting here sobbing about it.  On top of all that, Squid, who has not worked a single early morning for MONTHS now, is going to be working Wednesday and Thursday mornings so I’m going to have to drag Monkey Boy out of bed and take him with us too!  I’m sure it will all be OK, but I wanted to be on the ball and ahead of the game so that things could go smoothly on Wednesday.  And it’s all screwed up because I just HAD to go shopping yesterday!

More so-called than ever

Posted by: Gem | Comments (9)

Well, looks like my so-called homeschool will be more so-called than I had planned. With the new baby on the way, and with my laid-back style of education, Squid has really pushed to put the girls in school this year at least. He is on board with the basic idea of homeschooling, but concerned that they may be falling behind. My view is, I have 18 years to get it all in, so I don’t need to necessarily do things in the order that school would. His view is panicked that they’ll turn 18 and won’t know anything. I really do respect his concerns, I am just coming at this from such a different direction!

So, after many, many, many conversations, I finally gave in and agreed to look into it. And wouldn’t you know, the day I decided to do that (and blogged it), a friend of ours from church reminded me that his wife teaches in a Montessori charter school. First through third grades are taught together so the girls would be together in class, our close Christian friend teaching, their dance teacher is an aide there, Montessori mindset — what could be better (except homeschooling of course!)? I filled out the paperwork, took it in, then waited for a call.

Well, it’s August and no call! “Oh, darn, I guess they’re full,” I told Squid. I told God “If you wanted them in school, I guess there would be a place for them. I’m taking this as a sign that they should be at home.”

Thursday — call from the school. “Mrs. J made a note that they were her dance students and it somehow got coded in the computer that they were current students here! So we didn’t get you the new student packet last month. I’m going to mail this to you; I need you to fill it out and get it to me on Monday.” Sigh. OK, definitely NOT a sign from God. I haven’t seen the packet yet, but I am not looking forward to this. Vaccination information — I’ve been a little laid-back in that area too — forms to fill out, supplies to buy. Yech!

I like our laid-back schedule routine lazy days. I like having the girls with me. I like knowing what they’re learning and learning along with them. I like knowing all their friends and friends’ parents. I don’t like the idea of them only studying what the teacher wants. I don’t like the idea of homework. I don’t like this one bit. I do admit that I am overwhelmed and getting more so by the minute. I do admit that I may be a bit TOO laid back when it comes to our homeschooling, enough so that Squid’s getting worried. So, I’m going to fill out the paperwork, take it in, and pray, pray, pray!

I’ll still have my little Monkey-boy at home. He’s just soaking up learning like a sponge — and I haven’t even “taught” him anything. At church the other day, he picked up the kid’s worksheet and showed me all his numbers — they weren’t even in order — and he knew them all by sight up to 10! I guess technically we’re still homeschooling so Ron and Andrea won’t kick me out of here. It’s going to be an interesting new school year.

Wild Hogs Review

Posted by: Gem | Comments (2)

OK, I’m actually live-blogging this review. What does that say about the movie? I wasn’t really that interested in it, but thought Squid might enjoy it — and he does. As for me, can I borrow a phrase from Ree and say “hiney cringe”? The jokes telegraph from a mile a way, the characters are extremely stereotyped, and the humor is, well, guy humor. It does have funny moments, and all four guys are actors I enjoy in comedy. But we’re now 20 minutes into the movie, and I’m ready to go read a book. Squid does seem to be enjoying it (do I know my guy or what?) — and he’s making me watch the whole thing so I can finish this review. Sigh.

Gay cop. Twice. Wonder how many more times he’ll show up.

Real biker bar. Oh, bet there’s gonna be trouble!

Yep. Ray Liotta is trouble.

Movie is moving slooooooow. But the soundtrack is pretty cool. Little Bon Jovi right now is nice.

Last gas for 200 miles, and they just drove off. Not good. Buzzard on the road, really?

When it’s plural, it’s cacti. That was funny.

Chili cookoff karaoke. OK, that was funny too.

Yeah, the second guy to slap the bull is in deep crap. Deep.

Really, it looks like this is another case of all the funny parts were shown in the previews.

Would you like me to do the rest of the review in single sentences? I didn’t think so. I guess I’ll wait til I actually have something interesting to say.

Not! I wonder how many times Squid will say “they are so dead” before the movie is over.

The cameo at the end is worth the whole thing!!!

I guess overall, it is a funny midlife crisis movie. But I would definitely call it a guy movie. It wouldn’t have been worth the price of movie admission. But on DVD, it’s a mindless bit of fun.

Oh my gosh. The credits. I’m peeing my pants!!!

BVHE Publicity provided this movie for the purpose of review. They may think they got gypped on this one.
